EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Major Gills wife, Henrietta Mabel (nee Dobel), standing proudly on the cliff above Prussia Cove in St Hilary, Cornwall. The photograph dates back to around 1925 and is part of a collection titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" which Major Arthur William Gill presented during the 1920s and 1930s. Prussia Cove derives its name from John Carter, an infamous smuggler who fancied himself as the King of Prussia. In this picturesque scene, Henrietta overlooks the breathtaking coastal landscape with a rowing boat and lobster pots dotting the shoreline below. Her elegant hat adds a touch of sophistication to her presence. Major Gill was not only an amateur photographer but also a well-known figure in Cornwall and beyond. His presentations featuring both still images and cine films were highly regarded by various groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What makes Major Gill's work truly remarkable is his unique approach to colorizing his quarter plate slides by hand. This meticulous process added vibrant hues that brought each image to life with great effect. As we admire this extraordinary photograph today, let us appreciate not only its historical significance but also Major Gill's dedication to capturing the beauty of Cornwall through his lens.
