EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Samuel John Govier's parents, Samuel and Annie, standing proudly in the doorway of his photographic van in Cornwall during the early 1900s. Samuel John Govier was a trailblazing photographer who made significant contributions to the field during the late 19th and early 20th century in Cornwall. In this snapshot, we see Samuel Govier holding a photograph for development while surrounded by numerous other images hanging on the open door of his modified van. The van itself is distinct from previous depictions as it has been altered with fewer windows. During his early years as a photographer, Samuel John Govier would travel around on his bicycle or utilize a horse-drawn van before eventually establishing studios in Chacewater in 1907 and later St Agnes. His dedication to capturing moments through photography led him to become one of Cornwall's most renowned photographers of that era. After retiring from photography, he transitioned into becoming a grocer in Chacewater where he resided. This image not only showcases an important moment within Govier's family history but also provides insight into the evolution of photography techniques and transportation methods during this period. The print offers glimpses into both fashion trends and Cornish culture at that time, making it an invaluable piece within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection.
