Indian Troops in camp in Derbyshire. The officer commanding the unit

Indian Troops in camp in Derbyshire.
The officer commanding the unit, inspecting the quarter guard.
They are members of the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC), mainly from the Punjab, who set up camp in the county during the Second World War.
The RIASC were a non-combative force which cared for and fed both animals and men and moved supplies. They were officially Animal Transport Companies, although known as Mule Companies.
After their service with the British Expeditionary Force in France and subsequent evacuation from the beaches of Dunkirk, around 500 men were sent to Shirley Common Camp on the Osmaston Estate, near Ashbourne, before some were dispersed to other similar facilities elsewhere..

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - Indian Troops in camp in Derbyshire during the Second World War. The commanding officer of this unit can be seen inspecting the quarter guard, exuding authority and attention to detail. These brave soldiers belonged to the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC), hailing mainly from Punjab. Their purpose was not combative; instead, they were responsible for caring for and feeding both animals and men, as well as transporting vital supplies. Interestingly, they were officially known as Animal Transport Companies but colloquially referred to as Mule Companies. After serving with the British Expeditionary Force in France and being evacuated from Dunkirk's beaches, approximately 500 men found themselves stationed at Shirley Common Camp on the Osmaston Estate near Ashbourne. Some were later dispersed to similar facilities across the country. The image itself dates back to September 3rd, 1940 - a time when tensions ran high during World War II. It showcases soldiers dressed impeccably in their uniforms adorned with turbans while brandishing swords - symbols of their heritage intertwined with their duty towards war efforts. This remarkable photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the diverse contributions made by individuals from different backgrounds who came together under challenging circumstances to defend freedom and peace during one of humanity's darkest periods.
