Elton John, singer and songwriter pictured during his interview for John Gibson

Elton John, singer and songwriter pictured during his interview for John Gibson, Chief Sports Writer at The Newcastle Chronicle in November 1977.
Elton wears a Watford Football Club on his left lapel and speaks passionately about the club. He talks of other clubs having no ambition, and says " I ve devised a five year plan aimed at getting us into The Second Division." Watford are sitting at the top of the fourth division as of this picture. He went on to say" I ve given five year contracts to Graham Taylor and his assistant Bertie Mee. They are fun to work with. They stay. But our ground isn t up to scratch. We have bloody awful offices and no decent premises for the Supporters Club. All that will change. I want a 30, 000 all seated stadium used by all the community as a whole. Whats more. I ll get it." " Watford are going places, thanks to Graham (Taylor). Hes fabulous. The best" Elton admitted that his introduction to the Watford board caused a few embarrassing moments. " Mainly" he said, " because at the time I was about 6.ft 3inches and had pink hair. It was while I was wearing those bloody big platform boots shows and doing crazy things. Now I m 5ft. 3 inches and wearing suits and ties whenever I am on club business."
Full interview published in The Newcastle Chronicle on 19th November 1977 page 14.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from November 1977, the legendary singer and songwriter Elton John is pictured during an interview with John Gibson, Chief Sports Writer at The Newcastle Chronicle. Sporting a Watford Football Club pin on his left lapel, Elton exudes passion as he discusses the club's future. At the time of this picture, Watford sits atop the fourth division. Elton reveals his ambitious five-year plan aimed at propelling Watford into The Second Division. He proudly announces that he has awarded five-year contracts to Graham Taylor and Bertie Mee, expressing admiration for their work ethic and dedication. However, Elton acknowledges that improvements are needed within the club infrastructure. Determined to transform Watford into a community hub, he envisions a state-of-the-art stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000. Despite initial skepticism from the board due to his flamboyant appearance in those days – standing tall at 6ft 3inches with pink hair and platform boots – Elton now presents himself as a more refined figure at 5ft 3 inches in suits and ties when conducting club business. This remarkable photograph captures not only Elton John's unwavering commitment to Watford but also his transformation both personally and professionally over time. It serves as a testament to his enduring love for football and highlights his determination to elevate Watford's status within English football leagues. The full interview can be found in The Newcastle Chronicle on November 19th, 1977 (Page 14), while this evocative image was captured by renowned photographer John Napier on November 16th of that same year.
