EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Bill Rowntree, we witness a heartwarming moment between renowned entertainer Neil Diamond and Lord Tavistock at Chelsea Barracks. Although Lord Tavistock is not pictured, the image tells a tale of gratitude and generosity. The two gentlemen are seen presenting a cheque to the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards as a token of appreciation for their outstanding performance during last Saturday's concert at Woburn Abbey. Neil Diamond's concert drew an astounding crowd of over 51,000 people, and it is evident that his music touched the hearts of many. In recognition of the exceptional talent displayed by the Drums Corps at the beginning of his show, Diamond decided to express his gratitude in a meaningful way. The proceeds from sales of Neil Diamond programmes were collected and will be donated to the Household Division Funds (Silver Jubilee Appeal). This photograph captures not only a significant moment in history but also showcases how music can bridge gaps between different worlds – in this case, American entertainment and British military tradition. It serves as a reminder that acts of kindness have no boundaries or limitations. Bill Rowntree has skillfully immortalized this touching gesture through his lens, allowing us to relive this remarkable event from July 7th, 1977. This print stands as a testament to both Neil Diamond's philanthropy and the enduring power of music to bring people together for noble causes.
