EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1975, we witness a significant moment in the history of art and mining. Oliver Kilbourn, a former coal face worker at Ellington Colliery, stands proudly on the right as the sole surviving founder member of the renowned Ashington group of painters. This remarkable group emerged from humble beginnings and their future was uncertain due to the advancing ages of its members. However, hope shines through as the Coal Board steps forward to become custodians of nearly 100 precious paintings created by these talented individuals. To celebrate this alliance, Mr Humphrey Watson, area director of the Coal Board, officially opens an exhibition at Graham House in Newcastle. Oliver Kilbourn and six other members are honored guests on this momentous occasion. In this particular snapshot captured during that eventful day in October 1975, Oliver can be seen standing beside Mr Watson with admiration for his own masterpiece titled "The Gold Press". It is a testament to his artistic talent and resilience amidst years spent toiling underground. This image not only encapsulates an important chapter in art history but also highlights the indomitable spirit found within communities like Ashington. The fusion of coal mining and artistic expression serves as a reminder that beauty can emerge even from seemingly harsh environments.
