Coventry Magic Circle are trying to solve a vanishing trick
Coventry Magic Circle are trying to solve a vanishing trick. They have only 25 active members, half the number they had once. Where has all the talent gone? Mr. Will Stanley, a founder of the circle 35 years ago, and a past president, blames television and other diversions. " Young people don t bother to learn, " he says. The circle are prepared to give instructions to would-be conjourers, illusionists, ventriloquists or Punch and Judy puppeteers. A beginners class is meeting fortnightly at the Maudsley Hotel. The next meeting is tomorrow night. Speaking a the circles dinner dance at the Berkelely Hotel, Canon Lawrence Jackson, vicar of Holy Trinity, said that in a city as fast growing and cosmopolitan as Coventry, organisations that welded together people with standards and ideals in a common prupose, were especially valuable. In this photograph Canon Jackson tries out a dangerous-looking illusion for Mr. Morgan, president of the Coventry Magic Circle, at the dinner dance. Looking on are Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Morgan.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 13th April 1970, we witness the Coventry Magic Circle's valiant attempt to solve a perplexing vanishing trick. Once boasting a thriving community of talented magicians, the circle now finds itself with only 25 active members, half the number it once had. The question on everyone's mind is: where has all the talent gone? According to Mr. Will Stanley, one of the founders and past president of the circle, television and other modern distractions are to blame for this decline in interest among young people. He laments that they no longer bother to learn and appreciate the art of magic. However, determined not to let their beloved craft fade away into obscurity, the Coventry Magic Circle extends an open invitation to aspiring conjurers, illusionists, ventriloquists, or Punch and Judy puppeteers. They eagerly offer instructions and guidance through a beginners class held fortnightly at the Maudsley Hotel. At a recent dinner dance held at the prestigious Berkeley Hotel, Canon Lawrence Jackson - vicar of Holy Trinity - emphasized how organizations like Coventry Magic Circle play a crucial role in bringing together individuals with shared standards and ideals within such a fast-growing city as Coventry. The accompanying image captures Canon Jackson fearlessly attempting an intriguing illusion for Mr. Morgan - president of Coventry Magic Circle - while their respective partners Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Morgan observe with anticipation. This photograph serves as both a nostalgic reminder of bygone days when magic reigned supreme and an inspiration for future generations who may yet unlock its secrets once more.
