EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, taken during the Aldeburgh Festival in 1963, world-renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) is seen leaving for a performance at Orford Church, accompanied by his wife Diana Gould (1920-2015), a former ballerina. The couple are joined by an unidentified friend and Orford resident, Mrs. Heron, who generously offered her house for the use of visiting soloists during the festival. Yehudi Menuhin, a prodigious talent, had already established himself as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century by the time this image was captured. Born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrants, he began studying the violin at the age of three and made his professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra at the age of ten. Throughout his illustrious career, he performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, and recorded a vast repertoire of classical and contemporary works. Diana Gould, who married Menuhin in 1947, was also a talented artist in her own right. She had trained as a ballerina with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the New York City Ballet before turning to painting and sculpture. The couple's shared passion for the arts and their commitment to nurturing young talent made them a beloved presence at the Aldeburgh Festival, which was founded by composer Benjamin Britten and his partner, tenor Peter Pears, in 1948. This photograph captures a moment of quiet intimacy and camaraderie before the trio sets off to share their art with the people of Orford. It is a poignant reminder of the enduring power of music and the beauty of human connection, as well as a testament to the rich cultural history of the Aldeburgh Festival.
