EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of determination and resolve among the Serbian soldiers as they departed to defend their homeland against the invading Austrian forces in the summer of 1914. The image was taken in the heat of the Balkan Wars, which erupted when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28, 1914. The Serbian army, which had gained much acclaim for its bravery and tenacity, left their garrisons and headed to the front lines to protect their country from the advancing Austrian troops. The Serbian people had long been a thorn in the side of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and tensions between the two powers had been simmering for years. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on June 28, 1914, provided the final spark that ignited the conflict. The Serbian soldiers in this photograph are seen here in high spirits as they prepare to embark on what would become a long and arduous campaign. Their faces are etched with a mixture of excitement, pride, and apprehension, reflecting the complex emotions that accompanied the outbreak of war. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people during this tumultuous period in European history. The Serbian army's courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds would prove instrumental in the eventual outcome of the war, as they were able to hold off the Austrian forces long enough for the Allied Powers to intervene and turn the tide of the conflict. This photograph stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Serbian people and their unwavering commitment to defending their homeland.
