EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the historic moment of the Queen Mary's launch on September 26, 1934, at the Clydebank Shipyard in Scotland. The Queen Mary, a magnificent passenger liner, was the largest ship in the world at the time of her launch, with a tonnage of 70,000 and a length of 306 meters at the waterline. The launch of the Queen Mary marked a significant milestone in maritime history, as she was the flagship of the Cunard White Star Line and represented the pinnacle of ocean liner design and luxury. The ship was designed to provide first-class transatlantic passage for passengers, featuring opulent accommodations, grand ballrooms, swimming pools, and world-class dining. The launch day was a grand event, with thousands of people gathered to witness the moment when the Queen Mary was gently slid into the water. The ship was propelled down the slipway by a combination of steam and hydraulic power, and once in the water, the engines were started, and the ship began her maiden voyage to Southampton, England. The Queen Mary went on to have a storied career, serving as a troop transport during World War II and later being converted into a cruise ship in the 1960s. She remained in service until 1967, when she was retired and eventually scrapped in 1968. This photograph is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of ocean liner travel in the early 20th century and serves as a reminder of the rich history of maritime transportation.
