The illustration showcases two distinctive waterbirds native to New Zealand's Snares Islands: the Snares Island Snipe (Tutukiwi, Coenocorypha huegeli) and the Bar-tailed Godwit (Kuaka, Limosa lapponica). The Snares Island Snipe, a small, brown-feathered bird with a distinctive white stripe over its eye, is a rare endemic species endemic to the Snares and Solander Islands. Once hunted to near extinction, conservation efforts have helped to stabilize their population. The Bar-tailed Godwit, a large, wading bird with long, straight, and slightly downcurved bills, is a migratory species that breeds in the northern hemisphere and winters in the southern hemisphere.
