EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts a harrowing scene of Arab slavers raiding a village on the Aruwimi River in Central Africa, as observed by Sir Henry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition in 1890. At the time, Emin Pasha, a German doctor, explorer, linguist, and Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province, had retreated with 10,000 followers to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, after being cut off from all communication during the Mahdi Rising. Considered lost, the British government sent out a rescue party led by Stanley to find and save him. The image shows the Arab slavers raiding a village from the perspective of the Yambuya Camp, which was occupied by Stanley's expedition. The engraving, created on December 21, 1890, provides a chilling reminder of the brutal reality of the transatlantic slave trade that continued to plague Central Africa long after its abolition in the Western world. The Arab slavers, armed with muskets and shields, are shown attacking the defenseless villagers, who are fleeing in terror or being rounded up. The Aruwimi River, a major trade route for the slave trade, is visible in the background. This haunting image is a testament to the courage and determination of Stanley's expedition, which successfully rescued Emin Pasha and brought him back to Egypt.
