This striking portrait captures the distinguished countenance of the Reverend Shute Barrington (1734-1826), an eminent churchman who left an indelible mark on the Anglican Church in England. Born into the noble Viscount Barrington family, Shute Barrington followed in the footsteps of his esteemed ancestors, rising through the ecclesiastical ranks with great distinction. His ecclesiastical career began in Llandaff, where he served as Bishop from 1782 to 1791. Subsequently, he was appointed Bishop of Salisbury in 1791, a position he held until 1805. In 1805, Barrington was elevated to the even more prestigious see of Durham, where he served until his retirement in 1826. Barrington's tenure as Bishop of Durham was marked by his commitment to the welfare of his diocese and his unwavering dedication to the Anglican faith. He oversaw numerous building projects, including the restoration of Durham Cathedral, and worked tirelessly to improve the education and living conditions of the clergy and laity in his diocese. Despite his noble birth, Barrington was known for his humility and pastoral care. He was a popular figure in Durham, and his sermons were renowned for their clarity, depth, and spiritual insight.
