EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a poignant moment in English history as Queen Elizabeth Woodville (1437-1492), the queen consort of King Edward IV (1442-1483), bids farewell to her young son, the Duke of York, later identified as Richard III (1452-1485). The scene, depicted in this 15th century English painting from the 1480s, unfolds in the grandeur of a royal chamber. The queen, dressed in rich robes and a jeweled headdress, tenderly holds her son's hand while the young prince gazes up at her with a mixture of sadness and determination. The presence of the clergy, including a clergyman in the foreground, underscores the solemnity of the occasion. It is believed that the young Duke of York was being sent to the north of England to secure his position against potential threats to the throne. Edward IV, who had recently returned from exile in the Netherlands, was keen to strengthen his hold on the kingdom and ensure the succession of his eldest son, Edward, Prince of Wales. The departure of the young Duke of York marked a significant turning point in the lives of both mother and son. Elizabeth Woodville, a Lancastrian by birth, had faced numerous challenges to her position as queen consort, including accusations of witchcraft and treason. Her devotion to her son, however, remained unwavering, as evidenced by this emotional farewell. The painting, now held in the collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the complexities of the late 15th century English court, where power struggles, family dynamics, and religious influences intertwined to shape the destiny of the realm.
