EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts the Northern Royal Albatross, also known as Toroa in Maori, and the Antipodean Albatross, with Diomedea sanfordi representing the Northern Royal Albatross and Diomedea antipodensis for the Antipodean Albatross. Painted by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist John Gerrard Keulemans for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," this artwork was published in Volume 3, Plate 41, in 1888. The Northern Royal Albatross is the largest of all the albatross species, with a wingspan reaching up to 12 feet. They are found in the Southern Ocean and are known for their long-distance flights, often traveling thousands of miles in search of food. They breed on subantarctic islands and are well adapted to life at sea, with webbed feet and a streamlined body. The Antipodean Albatross, also known as the Wandering Albatross, is the largest of all the wandering albatrosses and the second largest of all living birds. They are found in the Southern Ocean and are known for their remarkable ability to fly for long periods without flapping their wings. They breed on subantarctic islands and feed on squid, fish, and crustaceans. Keulemans' painting captures the majesty and grace of these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. His intricate attention to detail and use of vibrant colors bring the birds to life, making this a truly breathtaking work of art. Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" was a groundbreaking publication in the field of ornithology, and this painting is a testament to the importance of documenting and preserving the natural world.
