EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Princess Alice, Countess of Athlene (1883-1981), the last surviving grandchild of Queen Victoria, in all her regal splendor during the late 1930s. The Princess, whose full title was Alice, Princess Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Countess of Athlone, was the wife of Prince Albert, 1st Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. The Princess's elegant attire reflects the formal and refined fashion of the era, with a long, flowing gown adorned with intricate beading and a delicate lace collar. Her jewels add an air of regal sophistication, including a magnificent tiara, pearl earrings, and several rings on her fingers. The tiara, a family heirloom, features a centerpiece of diamonds and pearls, surrounded by smaller diamonds and a band of gold. Her pearl earrings and necklace, along with her pearl bracelet, add a subtle yet elegant shine to her outfit. Princess Alice was a member of the British royal family through her marriage to Prince Albert, who was the third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was also related to other European royal families through her Saxe-Coburg and Gotha heritage. The Princess continued to carry out royal duties until her death in 1981, making this portrait a significant representation of her regal status and the opulence of the royal era in the late 1930s.
