EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrea Pisano, also known as Andrea da Pontedera (1270-1349), was a renowned Italian sculptor of the Early Renaissance period, active in the Florentine school. This masterpiece, titled "Saturn," is a moulding that once adorned the exterior of Giotto's Campanile in Florence, Italy. Dated between 1337 and 1341, this relief on rock is a testament to the artistic brilliance of the Trecento era. The sculpture depicts the ancient Roman god Saturn, who was believed to have ruled the earth during the Golden Age. In this vertical, upright composition, Saturn is shown as a round, classic figure, with a serious expression and a flowing beard. He is shown holding a kidney-shaped stone, which was said to represent the time he consumed his own son, Saturnus, to maintain his power. This mythological scene is a reflection of the ancient Greco-Roman cultural influences that permeated the artistic and intellectual circles of Florence during the 14th century. The colorful and intricate details of the relief demonstrate the advanced sculptural techniques of the time, and the figures are rendered with a sense of depth and realism that sets them apart from the more stylized works of the preceding Gothic period. The sculpture's classical themes and Greco-Roman mythological references are emblematic of the broader cultural and artistic trends of the Florentine school during the Trecento, a period of great innovation and creativity in the history of Western art.
