This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a moment in time at the Camp Tonkinese, or Canton Tonkin, in the District of Haiphong, An Giang Province, Vietnam, circa 1909. The French colonial military base, established in the late 1800s, was home to the Vietnamese Rifles, also known as the Tirailleurs Tonkinois or Tonkinese Rifles. These elite troops, primarily made up of ethnic Vietnamese, were an integral part of the French colonial army in Indochina. In this image, a group of Vietnamese sharpshooters, or snipers, are seen training at the camp. Dressed in their distinctive uniforms, complete with fez-like headgear and bandoliers, they focus intently on their targets through their rifles' sights. The serene expression on their faces contrasts with the tense atmosphere created by the surrounding military camp and the ominous clouds gathering in the sky. The French colonial presence in Vietnam, which lasted from the late 19th century until the 1950s, was marked by a complex relationship between the colonizers and the colonized.
