EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning botanical illustration, titled "Pompelmouse Chadec" or Bitter Citrus, depicts the grapefruit tree (Citrus paradisi) as it was known in the early 19th century. The illustration is taken from "Histoire naturelle des Orangers" (Natural History of Oranges), a comprehensive work on citrus plants published between 1818 and 1820 by the French naturalist Antoine Risso. Held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London, this illustration showcases the grapefruit tree in all its botanical glory. The grapefruit is a large, juicy citrus fruit known for its bitter taste, which derives from the presence of various compounds, including limonin and naringenin. The tree is a member of the Rutaceae family, which is part of the larger order of flowering plants known as the eudicots or rosids. The eudicots, also called the angiospermae, are a diverse group of flowering plants characterized by the presence of seeds enclosed within an ovary. The grapefruit tree is shown here in exquisite detail, with its large, glossy leaves and clusters of white, five-petaled flowers. The tree's branches bear the familiar, round, yellow-green fruits, which are arranged in clusters. The intricately detailed illustration reveals the various parts of the fruit, including the thick, bitter rind, the juicy, segmented flesh, and the seeds. This illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of Antoine Risso and the skilled botanical artists of his time. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the grapefruit and the scientific knowledge of the 19th century. Today, the grapefruit remains a popular and nutritious fruit, enjoyed for its unique taste and numerous health benefits.
