Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), a Dutch-born artist who became a leading figure in Victorian-era British art, is depicted in this photograph. Taken in 1912, the image captures the artist in the later years of his illustrious career, with his distinctive beard and piercing gaze. Born in Delft, Netherlands, Alma-Tadema initially studied law before turning to art. He moved to London in 1870 and quickly gained recognition for his meticulously detailed and historically accurate paintings. His works often depicted scenes from ancient Rome and Greece, as well as scenes from biblical stories. Alma-Tadema's dedication to historical accuracy extended beyond his paintings to his personal life. He was known for his impeccable attire, often wearing a toga-inspired robe and sandals in public. His studio was filled with antiquities and relics, which he used as inspiration for his work. The artist's popularity during the Victorian era was immense. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1899 for his services to art, and his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and other prestigious galleries around the world.
