EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the daily struggle for survival in the harsh conditions of a World War I prisoner-of-war camp. Titled "On, Fleischlose!" or "On, Fleshless!" in English, this drawing by Robert Walker depicts an inmate carrying a plate of food and a cooking pot. The inmate's gaunt face and emaciated body are a stark reminder of the dire circumstances that many prisoners faced during the war. The First World War, also known as the Great War, was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918. Millions of soldiers and civilians were displaced, and the harsh realities of war led to the establishment of numerous prisoner-of-war camps. Conditions in these camps varied greatly, but many were marked by overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate food supplies. Robert Walker, a British military topographical draftsman, created this drawing while serving with the Royal Engineers in France. His detailed and evocative images offer a unique perspective on the war, providing insight into the daily lives of soldiers and prisoners. This drawing, in particular, highlights the plight of prisoners, who were often subjected to harsh treatment and neglect. The title "On, Fleischlose!" is believed to have been a common command used by camp guards to urge prisoners to keep moving, regardless of their physical condition. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
