EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking engraving depicts Henry IV of France (1553-1610), a pivotal figure in European history during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born a Huguenot, Henry initially ruled as King of Navarre from 1572 to 1610. However, his conversion to Catholicism in 1593, following years of religious conflict, paved the way for his ultimate ascension to the throne of France in 1589, a position he held until his assassination in 1610. Henry IV's reign is marked by significant events in the history of Catholicism and Christianity in Europe. In 1598, he issued the Edict of Nantes, granting religious tolerance to the Huguenots, a decision that helped to quell the religious wars that had plagued the region for decades. This engraving captures the king in regal attire, reflecting his dual role as both King of Navarre and King of France. The House of Bourbon, to which Henry belonged, played a significant role in European politics during this period. Henry's conversion to Catholicism and his subsequent rule in France marked the end of the Valois dynasty and the beginning of the Bourbon rule in France. This engraving, with its vibrant colors and intricate details, offers a glimpse into the complex political and religious landscape of Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries.
