Harrison, union, liberty, and independence

Harrison, union, liberty, and independence. A large Whig campaign broadside, very similar to Westward the March of Empire (no. 1840-31) with the same lengthy text, here entitled Epitome of the life of William Henry Harrison... Framing the text are two pairs of Ionic columns supporting a pediment, on which rests an eagle holding olive branches and arrows in his talons and a streamer reading Harrison Union Liberty and Independence in his beak. Behind the eagle a rising sun is partially visible. Below is a bust portrait of Harrison, after Albert Gallatin Hoits 1840 painting. The columns rest on bases, with pictures of two Harrison victories, the battles of Tippecanoe (left) and the Thames (right). On the left pedestal stands an Indian with a tomahawk and rifle; on the right is a frontier hunter in buckskins and coonskin hat, holding a rifle. Date c1840. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking campaign broadside, entitled "Epitome of the life of William Henry Harrison," was produced around 1840 during Harrison's presidential campaign. The design is reminiscent of the popular Whig broadside "Westward the March of Empire," with its lengthy text framed by two pairs of Ionic columns and a pediment. Atop the pediment, an eagle holds olive branches and arrows in its talons, symbolizing peace and war, while a streamer reading "Harrison Union Liberty and Independence" emerges from its beak. Behind the eagle, a rising sun is partially visible, representing the dawn of a new era under Harrison's leadership. Below the eagle, a bust portrait of Harrison, based on a painting by Albert Gallatin Hoits, gazes out confidently. The columns rest on bases, each depicting a significant victory in Harrison's military career: the Battle of Tippecanoe on the left and the Battle of the Thames on the right. An Indian, armed with a tomahawk and rifle, stands on the left pedestal, representing the Native American opposition Harrison faced during the Battle of Tippecanoe. On the right, a frontier hunter in buckskins and coonskin hat holds a rifle, symbolizing the frontier spirit and the settlers' determination to defend their lands. This powerful and evocative image was designed to rally support for Harrison's presidential bid, emphasizing his military prowess, commitment to the Union, and dedication to liberty and independence. The use of classical architectural elements, symbolic imagery, and portraits of Harrison's victories effectively conveyed the message that Harrison was the right man to lead the nation during a time of great change and uncertainty.
