EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and complex figure of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (circa 1517-1547). Known for his military prowess, political acumen, and poetic talents, Surrey was a central figure in the Tudor court during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. Born into a noble family, Surrey rose to prominence under the patronage of Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, who became his father-in-law when Surrey married Norfolk's daughter, Catherine. Surrey's military career began in earnest during the Scottish Wars, where he distinguished himself in battles against the Scots. However, Surrey's political ambitions and gamesmanship would ultimately lead to his downfall. In the power struggle that ensued after Henry VIII's death, Surrey aligned himself with the faction supporting Edward VI's succession over Lady Jane Grey. When Edward VI died and Mary I ascended to the throne, Surrey was arrested and charged with treason. Despite his poetic talents, which included translations of Petrarch's sonnets and the composition of original verse, Surrey's political missteps proved fatal. He was beheaded on Tower Hill on February 19, 1547. This haunting portrait of Surrey, with its intense gaze and brooding expression, serves as a poignant reminder of the dangerous political landscape of the Tudor court and the consequences of ambition and misalliance.
