EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking lithographic print depicts the Italian patriot and statesman, Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882). Garibaldi is considered a national hero in Italy for his role in the unification of the country in the late 19th century. Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, Garibaldi spent much of his early life at sea as a sailor before becoming involved in various political and revolutionary movements. In 1834, he led a failed uprising against the Brazilian monarchy and was exiled to Europe. There, he met and married the famous Italian revolutionary, Anita Garibaldi. Together, they planned and executed the Expedition of the Thousand, a military campaign to unify the various Italian states under the banner of the Kingdom of Sardinia. The success of this campaign helped pave the way for the eventual unification of Italy in 1861. This print, produced by Pound Litho, captures the intensity and determination of Garibaldi's gaze, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the cause of Italian unity. The image also includes the Italian tricolore flag, which had become a symbol of the Italian unification movement. The print's intricate details and bold colors bring to life the passion and energy of this pivotal moment in Italian history. Garibaldi's legacy continues to be celebrated in Italy and beyond, as a symbol of the country's rich history and enduring spirit. This print serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and achievements of this remarkable man and the impact he had on the course of Italian history.
