EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros (1436-1517), a prominent Spanish cardinal and statesman of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Born in Cisneros, Castile, Jimenez rose to prominence under the reigns of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. He was a polyglot, fluent in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, and played a significant role in the intellectual and cultural development of Europe during the Modern Age. Jimenez served as the Grand Inquisitor of Spain, a position he held from 1492 until his death. He was also the Archbishop of Toledo and the Chancellor of the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. In 1493, he founded the University of Alcala, which became a center of learning and scholarship. One of Jimenez's most notable achievements was his role in the Crusade of Oran in 1509, where he led a successful campaign against the Moors in North Africa. The victory was a significant moment in the Reconquista, the long-term process of Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from the Moors. This engraving, produced by Carretero for the Spanish publication La Ilustracion in 1887, offers a striking and colorful portrait of a personage who played a pivotal role in Spanish history. Jimenez's regal attire, adorned with the insignia of his ecclesiastical and secular offices, reflects his grand status as a cardinal, statesman, and military leader. The image captures the essence of a man who straddled the worlds of religion, politics, and war, and whose influence extended far beyond the borders of Spain.
