EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and complex character of Henri, Duc d'Aumale (1822-1897), the fourth son of King Louis-Philippe of France. Born into the House of Orleans, Duc d'Aumale was known for his intelligence, charm, and artistic sensibilities. He was a patron of the arts and a collector of fine art and antiques, amassing an impressive collection that would later become the Musée Condé in Chantilly, France. The image, taken in 1822 when Duc d'Aumale was just a young man, reveals a thoughtful and introspective demeanor. His piercing gaze and serious expression suggest a deep inner contemplation, while the delicate folds of his cravat and the elegant cut of his coat underscore his aristocratic heritage. Despite his privileged upbringing, Duc d'Aumale's life was marked by tragedy and personal loss. He was exiled from France following the Revolution of 1848 and spent many years in England and Italy. He also experienced the untimely death of his wife, the Duchess of Montpensier, in 1867. Throughout his life, Duc d'Aumale remained committed to his artistic pursuits and his role as a patron of the arts. He was a generous supporter of artists and writers, including Victor Hugo and Gustave Doré, and played a significant role in the development of the Chantilly School of painting. This portrait offers a glimpse into the complex and intriguing life of a man who defied the expectations of his aristocratic upbringing and left a lasting legacy as a patron of the arts and a collector of inestimable value.
