Captain Augustus Hartmann, a distinguished officer in the 2nd Line Battalion of the Kings German Legion during the Napoleonic Wars, is depicted in this striking oil on panel painting by Paul Dumortier. Painted in Tournai, Belgium, in 1815, just before the fateful Battle of Waterloo, the portrait shows Captain Hartmann with a serious expression, his head turned to the right. The intricately detailed decorative gilt frame adds to the grandeur of the image. Captain Hartmann, who served in the German army from 1803 to 1816, is shown wearing the uniform of the Kings German Legion, complete with the distinctive blue facings and white lace.
