EDITORS COMMENTS
This series of photographs depicts members of the 25th and 40th Companies of the Royal Engineers engaged in a lively game of 'Bounce the Beecham' in Hong Kong during December 1910. The soldiers, dressed in their military uniforms, are seen enthusiastically participating in this unique and entertaining activity, which was invented by the renowned British cartoonist and inventor, William Heath Robinson (1872-1944). The game, which was designed to provide amusement and relaxation for the troops during their leisure time, involved bouncing a ball, known as a 'Beecham,' off a series of wooden planks arranged in a zigzag pattern. The objective was to keep the ball in the air for as long as possible by bouncing it from one plank to another. The game gained immense popularity among the British military personnel stationed in various parts of the world, including Hong Kong. The middle right image in this series is the original W. Heath Robinson illustration of his game, which was published in the Illustrated London News (ILN) on 7th January 1911. The soldiers in the photographs are seen replicating the poses and actions depicted in the illustration, adding a sense of authenticity and connection to the original design. These historical images, courtesy of the estate of Mrs J.C.Robinson/Pollinger Ltd/ILN/Mary Evans, offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the recreational activities and camaraderie that existed among the British soldiers during their time in Hong Kong. The Bounce the Beecham game, with its simple yet engaging design, continues to capture the imagination of people even today, making it a significant part of the rich history of British military life.
