This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Orang-Outang de Bornéo et Gibbon d'Argent," is an exquisite illustration from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816. The illustration, which measures approximately 11 x 14 inches, was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The illustration features two endangered primate species native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo: the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the silvery gibbon (Hylobates moloch). The Bornean orangutan, depicted on the left, is shown in a contemplative pose, with its long, shaggy reddish-brown fur, expressive face, and powerful limbs. The silvery gibbon, on the right, is shown swinging gracefully from a tree branch, its silvery fur shimmering in the light, and its long, slender limbs and prehensile tail providing a striking contrast to the orangutan's robust physique.
