EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a panoramic view of Liege, Belgium, during the early days of World War I. In the foreground, the regal figure of Albert I, King of the Belgians, stands proudly, gazing out at the industrial cityscape before him. The scene is one of contrasts – the modernity of the factories and chimneys, belching smoke into the sky, juxtaposed with the ancient, fortified walls of the city. In August 1914, Liege became a focal point of the German invasion, as 30,000 Belgian troops, led by General Gerard Leman, defended the city against an attacking force of approximately 100,000 German soldiers. The initial resistance was strong, with the forts holding off the German advance for several days. However, the relentless bombardment by the Germans' Big Bertha howitzers eventually pulverised the fortifications, and Liege fell on August 7, 1914. Despite the city's eventual surrender, its brave resistance earned it the prestigious French Legion d'Honneur, which is commemorated in this image. The Legion d'Honneur is a decoration of the French military merit, and it was awarded to Liege in recognition of its valiant defence against the invading German forces. The panoramic view of Liege serves as a poignant reminder of the city's resilience and the sacrifices made during the early days of the First World War.
