EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Native American Equestrian Studies Sketchbook, a remarkable piece of art from the Artokoloro collection. Dating back to around 1860, this sketchbook is a testament to the talent and creativity of its creator, John Quincy Adams Ward. Ward, an American artist hailing from Urbana, Ohio, was a student of renowned sculptor Henry Kirke Brown. As Dean of American Sculpture, Ward's contributions were significant in shaping the field during his time. One notable addition to his portfolio was the monumental bronze sculpture titled "Indian Hunter" which was installed in New York City's Central Park in 1869. The Native American Equestrian Studies Sketchbook reveals Ward's fascination with indigenous subjects during the 1860s. Through delicate graphite drawings on paper measuring approximately 8 1/16 by 20.5 centimeters (or about 3 by 8 inches), he captured various scenes depicting Native Americans on horseback. With meticulous attention to detail and skillful execution, these sketches offer us a glimpse into both the artistic techniques employed by Ward and his deep appreciation for Native American culture. The Liszt Collection has preserved this historical gem that not only celebrates Ward's artistic prowess but also serves as a valuable record of America's diverse heritage.
