EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Martyrdom Saint Andrew" painting, created around 1595 by Otto van Veen, a renowned Netherlandish artist. The artwork is executed in brunaille oil technique on paper and features a distinct framing line drawn with brown ink. Measuring approximately 11 1/4 x 7 5/8 inches (286 x 193 cm), this sheet holds great historical significance as it represents one of the earliest surviving preparatory sketches for Van Veen's monumental painting. The main subject of the artwork is the crucifixion of Saint Andrew, one of the apostles, who was ordered to be martyred by Proconsul Aegeus. In this powerful depiction, Saint Andrew can be seen tied to an X-shaped cross while mounted soldiers surround him on horseback. The intense emotions conveyed through Van Veen's brushstrokes make this piece truly remarkable. Originally intended for placement on a high altar in an Antwerp church, this sketch offers us a glimpse into Van Veen's creative process and his ability to capture dramatic scenes with exceptional skill. The attention to detail and masterful use of chiaroscuro highlight his artistic prowess. As part of the Liszt Collection, this print allows art enthusiasts and historians alike to appreciate and study this significant work from Dutch art history.
