The drawings were skillfully crafted by Thomas Sandby, a British artist baptized in Nottingham in 1723 and passed away in Windsor in 1798. Sandby's brother Paul was an important influence on his early development as he too was an accomplished artist. Thomas Sandby's expertise shines through this piece as it exemplifies his mastery of British watercolor practice. His talent was recognized when he was appointed as the first professor of architecture at the Royal Academy. Additionally, he worked diligently as a deputy ranger and architect for King George III.
