Sledging at Moscow [drawn by Manuel], 1850. Creator: Unknown

Sledging at Moscow [drawn by Manuel], 1850. Winter transport in Russia. The Muscovite machine...looks, to the coachman's eye, a desperate device, wherein the forlorn hope of safety lies in the very imminence of the peril. Possibly, the driver's head may be far below the range of his courser's heels! Any one in search of a sensation might, with a fair prospect of success, try an airing some fine frosty morning on the bosom of the Neva, behind a kicker...It is said that during the season upwards of fifty thousand sledges, laden with provisions, enter Moscow daily...A close carriage, placed on runners instead of wheels, is called a vasok; it is a very convenient vehicle for town use, and it is preferred by many people for winter travelling, on account of its warmth'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Sledging at Moscow: A Thrilling Winter Journey, as Depicted by Manuel in 1850 This image, drawn by Manuel and published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the winter transport scene in Moscow during the 19th century. The print portrays a horse-drawn sled, or troika, navigating through the snowy streets of Moscow. The Muscovite machine, as described in the accompanying text, appears to be a daring contraption to the coachman's eye, with the driver's head potentially dangerously close to the horses' hooves. The text further reveals that during the winter season, over fifty thousand sledges laden with provisions entered Moscow daily. The close carriage, known as a vasok, was a popular vehicle for town use due to its warmth and convenience. The scene depicts a bustling city, with fortifications and fortresses, such as the Kremlin, in the background, adding to the winter wonderland atmosphere. The horses, bundled up against the cold, pull the sled with determination, their breath visible in the frosty air. The men, bundled up against the cold, seem unfazed by the wintry conditions, making for an intriguing contrast to the modern-day perception of the harsh Russian winter. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when horse-drawn vehicles ruled the roads and the winter season brought a unique charm to everyday life.
