EDITORS COMMENTS
The Marriage of Richard Duke of York: A Historical Engraving Depicting a Fateful Union". This engraving, created in the mid-19th century by John Tallis & Company, transports us back to the 15th century. The scene captures an important event in English history - the marriage of Richard Duke of York, brother to Edward V. The young couple at the center of this print is Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, and Anne de Mowbray, 8th Countess of Norfolk. Their union took place in St Stephens Chapel in Westminster when they were merely children; Richard was around four years old while Anne was five. However, tragedy would soon befall these innocent souls. Shortly after their wedding and amidst political turmoil, both Richard and his older brother Edward mysteriously vanished from sight. This disappearance occurred after their uncle Richard III seized power as King of England in 1483. James Northcote's original painting from 1821 served as inspiration for this engraving that now offers us a glimpse into medieval life and customs. The intricate details captured by J Rogers skillfully depict the attire worn during that era. As we gaze upon this historic image with reverence for its significance within British history, let us remember the enigmatic fate that befell these young royals who became known as "The Princes in the Tower.
