Howrah Floating Bridge, Calcutta, 1905. Howrah Bridge, a pontoon bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. The Government of Bengal passed the Howrah Bridge Act in the year 1871 under the Bengal Act IX of 1871. A contract was signed with Bradford Leslie (1831-1926) to construct a pontoon bridge. Parts of the bridge were constructed in England and shipped to Calcutta, where they were assembled. The bridge was completed in 1874. [The Commercial Union, Calcutta, c1905]
