Third Great Seal of Queen Anne, obverse, 1702-1714 (1906)

Third Great Seal of Queen Anne, obverse, 1702-1714 (1906). Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Third Great Seal of Queen Anne, capturing the essence of her reign as the last Stuart monarch. Queen Anne, daughter of James II, ascended to the throne in 1702 and became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the Act of Union in 1707. The image portrays Queen Anne seated on her majestic throne, adorned with a resplendent crown and holding symbols of power such as a sceptre and an orb. Surrounding her are cherubs playing musical instruments, adding an ethereal touch to this regal scene. Queen Anne's reign witnessed significant political developments, including a decline in royal authority in favor of ministers and the establishment of a two-party system. However, it was also marked by personal challenges as she struggled to produce an heir. This led Parliament to pass legislation ensuring that upon her death, the crown would pass to the House of Hanover rather than allowing James Francis Edward Stuart to claim it. Through this beautifully colored lithograph from 1906 by Herbert Paul for Goupil & Co. , we are transported back to eighteenth-century Britain. It serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to Queen Anne's sovereignty during a transformative era in British history.
