EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Field Marshal Lord Roberts, the esteemed Commander in Chief of the forces in South Africa in 1902. The artist Lafayette skillfully captures the essence of this prominent British military figure, Sir Frederick, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), who was known for his remarkable achievements during Victorian times. Roberts' distinguished career began with his heroic actions during the Indian Mutiny, which earned him the prestigious Victoria Cross in 1858. However, he is most renowned for leading a daring march to capture Kandahar during the Second Afghan War from 1878 to 1880. This triumph led to his appointment as Baron of Kandahar and Waterford in 1892 and subsequent promotion to Field Marshal in 1895. In response to setbacks faced by British forces during the early stages of the Boer War, Roberts commanded reinforcements sent to South Africa in 1900. His successful intervention turned the tide of the campaign and solidified his reputation as a brilliant strategist. After returning home victorious, Lord Roberts assumed command as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his retirement from active service in 1904. This striking portrait from "Celebrities of the Army" published by George Newnes in London (1902), showcases Lord Roberts donning an impressive military uniform adorned with medals and a sash. The image exudes power and authority while capturing both Robert's stoic pose and attention-grabbing red ostrich feather adorning his hat. It serves as a testament to one man's exceptional leadership skills that shaped history on multiple fronts throughout two centuries - making it an invaluable piece within historical archives today.
