EDITORS COMMENTS
Dwelling of Kamchatka, 19th Century: A Snapshot of Daily Life in the Far East This black and white lithograph, titled 'Dwelling of Kamchatka,' is an intriguing glimpse into the daily life of the 19th century in the Russian Far East. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke. The scene depicts a simple dwelling on stilts, nestled in the rugged Kamchatka landscape. Four figures are gathered around a campfire, cooking their meal in a large cooking pot, while two dogs keep watch. The female figure in the foreground is likely the cook, preparing the evening meal for her family. The dwelling, with its thatched roof and wooden walls, is a testament to the resourcefulness and resilience of those living in this frontier region. The image was created by a team of talented artists and explorers, including Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, Jules David, and Edouard Jean Marie Hostein. Kittlitz, a German naturalist, was a member of the expedition, while Engelmann and Hostein were French cartographers who joined the voyage to document the geography of the regions visited. Jules David, another French artist, was responsible for creating the lithographs. This image offers a unique perspective on the daily life of the Kamchatka people during the 19th century, a time of exploration and discovery. The dwelling, with its simple yet functional design, reflects the harsh conditions of the Kamchatka Peninsula and the resourcefulness of those who called it home. The scene around the campfire, with the warm glow of the fire and the attentive dogs, conveys a sense of community and togetherness that transcends time and culture.
