Chasuble, c. 1720s. Creator: Unknown
Chasuble, c. 1720s. The elegant formal design of blossoms and leaves in this woven silk is especially suitable for chasubles, liturgical vestments worn over albs with lace flounces and cuffs. Its small detailed ornament is reminiscent of prestigious lace, and is known as " lace pattern." The division of the surface into three panels reflects the outmoded fashion of highlighting a different fabric in the center, often with religious images, called orphrey bands. In another change of ecclesiastical fashion, woven silks, such as this splendid example in the style of King Louis XIV (ruled 1638-1715) of France, were replaced during the early 1700s by embroidered decoration, which dominates in this exhibition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Chasuble from the 1720s, its creator unknown. The exquisite design of this woven silk garment is specifically tailored for chasubles, which are liturgical vestments worn over albs with lace flounces and cuffs. The intricate pattern of blossoms and leaves adorning the fabric resembles prestigious lace, earning it the name "lace pattern". Divided into three panels, this chasuble reflects an outdated fashion trend that highlighted different fabrics in the center, often featuring religious images known as orphrey bands. During the early 1700s, embroidered decoration began to replace woven silks like this splendid example in the style of King Louis XIV of France (ruled 1638-1715). However, this particular piece stands as a testament to its era's opulence and grandeur. Its small yet detailed ornamentation evokes a sense of prestige reminiscent of King Louis XIV's reign. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this 18th-century diasper textile represents French heritage art at its finest. While its creator remains unknown, their craftsmanship has left an indelible mark on history. This photograph by Heritage Art/Heritage Images beautifully captures every delicate detail and serves as a reminder that even centuries later, these pieces continue to inspire awe and admiration for their timeless beauty.
