Battle of Camerone, campaign of Mexico, 1863, (20th century). Artist: Jean Basin

Battle of Camerone, campaign of Mexico, 1863, (20th century). Fought on 30 April 1863, the Battle of Camaron established the legendary status of the French Foreign Legion as a fighting force. France intervened in Mexico in 1862, initially with the support of Spain and Britain, when Mexico suspended payments of interest on loans from foreign governments. The battle occurred when a small Foreign Legion detachment of 62 men and three officers commanded by Captain Jean Danjou were besieged and attacked at the Hacienda Camaron near Palo Verde by a Mexican force numbering 1600. After refusing to surrender, the Legionnaires mounted an heroic defence of the Hacienda until, out of ammunition, the surviving five mounted a bayonet charge against the Mexicans. Two were killed and the remaining three captured. The Mexican commander, Colonel Milan, was so impressed with their courage that he granted the survivors safe passage, allowing them to keep their flag. Every year the Foreign Legion commemorates the battle with a ceremony on what is known as Camerone Day

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the historic Battle of Camerone, a defining moment in the campaign of Mexico in 1863. Painted by Jean Basin, this artwork beautifully depicts the intensity and bravery displayed by the French Foreign Legion during this legendary battle. Taking place on 30th April 1863, a small detachment of only 62 men and three officers led by Captain Jean Danjou found themselves besieged and outnumbered at Hacienda Camaron near Palo Verde. Despite being faced with overwhelming odds as a Mexican force numbering 1600 attacked them, these courageous Legionnaires refused to surrender. The battle unfolded into an awe-inspiring display of heroism as they valiantly defended their position until running out of ammunition. Undeterred, the surviving five soldiers embarked on a remarkable bayonet charge against their adversaries. Although two were tragically killed in action, the remaining three were captured. Remarkably, Colonel Milan, the Mexican commander witnessing their unwavering courage firsthand was deeply moved. In recognition of their indomitable spirit and gallantry, he granted safe passage to these survivors while allowing them to retain their cherished flag. To this day, every year on Camerone Day, the Foreign Legion commemorates this extraordinary event with a solemn ceremony. The Battle of Camerone solidified not only France's intervention in Mexico but also established an enduring legacy for the French Foreign Legion as an elite fighting force that embodies valor and sacrifice.
