1930s Portsmouth CXP01_01_039

HIGH STREET, PORTSMOUTH. Looking south-west along the south side of the High Street from the junction with Lombard Street, showing the Dolphin Hotel and the Museum and Art Gallery on the left
This photograph shows buildings between numbers 40-47 High Street in Portsmouth, most of which were later destroyed by bomb damage in the Second World War. The Museum and Art Gallery, in the Doric style Guildhall (built 1837), was destroyed by a bombing raid on 10th January 1941. However the building to the left of it, the Dolphin Hotel, survived the war virtually intact. On the right hand side of the photograph is the office of Charpentier Ltd, printers, at 46 High Street

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling atmosphere of 1930s Portsmouth's High Street, as seen from the junction with Lombard Street. Looking south-west along the south side of the street, one's gaze is immediately drawn to two prominent landmarks on the left: The Dolphin Hotel and the Museum and Art Gallery. The buildings between numbers 40-47 High Street, featured in this photograph, sadly fell victim to devastating bomb damage during World War II. However, it is worth noting that while the Museum and Art Gallery was destroyed by a bombing raid on January 10th, 1941, its neighbor - the Dolphin Hotel - miraculously survived virtually intact. On closer inspection of this historical snapshot, one can also spot Charpentier Ltd's office at number 46 High Street on the right-hand side. This establishment belonged to printers Charles William Prickett and played an integral role in documenting Portsmouth's vibrant past. As we reflect upon this image today, it serves as a poignant reminder of both loss and destruction caused by war. Yet amidst these tragic circumstances emerges a glimmer of hope embodied by structures like the resilient Dolphin Hotel that persevered through adversity. Let us cherish such remnants from our history for they bear witness to our resilience as a community.
