Central London YMCA, Great Russell Street, Camden, Greater London. A view looking through scaffolding and the steel frame of the podium and basements of the Central London YMCA building during its construction.
It was announced in February 1971 that Laing had started work on a new building at Central London YMCA, to replace an existing building which had opened in the 1910s. The project comprised four residential towers between 6 and 12 storeys high, above a podium and basements. The basements and podium, which were built using reinforced concrete and structural steel, comprised Phase I of the project; the towers were built in Phase II. The building was completed in 1977

Through a maze of scaffolding and steel frames, we are given a glimpse into the early stages of this monumental project. The image showcases the podium and basements being meticulously crafted using reinforced concrete and structural steel, forming Phase I of this ambitious endeavor. Announced in February 1971, this construction aimed to replace an existing building that had served its purpose since the 1910s.
