EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the bustling streets of Lambeth, Greater London in 1936. The image captures a picturesque view across the River Thames, showcasing the iconic shot tower at Lambeth Lead Works. Designed by David Ridall Roper and built in 1826 for Thomas Maltby & Co. , this towering structure stands as a testament to the industrial prowess of its time. Operated by Walkers, Parker & Co during this period, the shot tower was an integral part of lead production. However, it met its unfortunate fate in 1962 when it was demolished to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. To the right of the shot tower stands another architectural gem - The Lion Brewery. Erected between 1836-37, this brewery added character and charm to Lambeth's skyline until its demolition in 1949 for construction of the Royal Festival Hall. The juxtaposition of these two historic landmarks against a backdrop of serene waterscape creates a mesmerizing riverscape that is truly timeless. This photograph by Charles William Prickett not only captures their grandeur but also serves as a poignant reminder of Lambeth's rich industrial heritage. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are transported back in time and reminded of how progress often comes at a cost - sacrificing beloved structures like these to pave way for new developments.
