EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse of Lambeth's industrial past in 1936. Standing tall against the London skyline, the iconic shot tower at Lambeth Lead Works takes center stage. Designed by David Ridall Roper and built in 1826 for Thomas Maltby & Co. , this Georgian masterpiece was a symbol of innovation and progress. Operated at the time by Walkers, Parker & Co. , the shot tower played a crucial role in producing lead shots used for ammunition. Its towering presence dominated the landscape until its unfortunate demolition in 1962 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. On the right side of this historic image, we catch a glimpse of The Lion Brewery, an equally significant landmark that once stood proudly on Belvedere Road. Built between 1836-37, it served as a testament to Lambeth's brewing heritage until its demolition in 1949 to pave way for the Royal Festival Hall. As we immerse ourselves in this snapshot from yesteryears, we are reminded of how rapidly our urban landscapes evolve over time. This photograph serves as both a tribute to these lost architectural gems and an invitation to reflect upon our ever-changing cityscape along with its rich history.
