Stow Horse Fair MCF01_02_1050
STOW-ON-THE-WOLD, COTSWOLD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE. Looking over a crowd of men towards an auctioneers rostrum at the Stow Horse Fair, with a white horse at the centre of the crowd.
The auctioneers on the rostrum are from Cotswold auctioneers and valuers Tayler & Fletcher.
A fair in Stow has been in existence for over 500 years when a charter was granted in 1476 for it to take place twice a year in May and October. Originally a place to sell sheep as the trade in wool declined, the fair became a horse fair attracting gypsies and travellers from all over the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of the Stow Horse Fair in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire. As we gaze upon the image, our eyes are drawn to a sea of men eagerly looking towards an auctioneer's rostrum. At the heart of this bustling crowd stands a magnificent white horse, commanding attention with its grace and beauty. The auctioneers on the rostrum belong to Cotswold auctioneers and valuers Tayler & Fletcher, their voices resonating through the air as they skillfully navigate the lively bidding process. This fair has been a cherished tradition for over 500 years since it was granted a charter in 1476. Originally focused on sheep sales during times when wool trade thrived, it eventually transformed into an iconic horse fair that attracted gypsies and travelers from all corners of the country. Through this photograph, we catch a glimpse into history; witness to an event that has shaped generations and preserved customs long forgotten by time. The year is set in the 1920s - an era where people gathered at fairs like these not only for commerce but also for community bonding and celebration. Katherine MacFee's lens transports us back in time, allowing us to immerse ourselves in this rich tapestry of people, animals, trade, and culture. It serves as both a testament to our shared heritage and a reminder of how traditions can endure against all odds.
