Henry Moore in his studio OP32771
HOGLANDS, PERRY GREEN, MUCH HADHAM, EAST HERTFORDSHIRE. Henry Moore in his studio at Perry Green working on his sculpture Reclining Figure, commissioned by the Festival of Britain 1951 for the South Bank Exhibition, London.
The original caption reads: " Henry Moore in his studio working on his new sculpture commissioned by the Festival of Britain 1951 for the South Bank Exhibition, London."
The final sculpture was created in bronze and had a surface decoration of thin string " to define the form", which Moore described as " [giving] the shape more insistence than it would do on an absolutely plain surface". The sculpture was displayed near the main entrance of the South Bank site. Following the end of the Festival, the site was cleared; casts of the sculpture were created and sold. This photograph was published on page 19 of The Official Book of The Festival of Britain, 1951, printed by HMSO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned sculptor Henry Moore in his studio at Perry Green, diligently working on his iconic sculpture, Reclining Figure. Commissioned by the Festival of Britain in 1951 for the South Bank Exhibition in London, this masterpiece would go on to leave an indelible mark on the world of art. Moore's dedication and artistic vision are palpable as he meticulously sculpts the bronze figure. The surface decoration of thin string adds a unique dimension to the piece, giving it a sense of insistence and depth that would not be achieved with a plain surface alone. This attention to detail showcases Moore's mastery over form and texture. Displayed near the main entrance of the South Bank site during the Festival, this striking sculpture captivated visitors with its abstract yet evocative design. Afterward, casts were created and sold as mementos of this momentous event. Published in The Official Book of The Festival of Britain in 1951, this photograph immortalizes Moore's creative process and serves as a testament to his status as one of history's most celebrated sculptors. It offers us a glimpse into his private sanctuary where ideas took shape and dreams became reality. As we admire this image today, we are reminded not only of Moore's genius but also of the enduring power that art holds to inspire generations across time.
