EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time at the Waring and Gillow Factory's cafeteria in August 1916. The factory staff, with their unique blend of awkwardness and camaraderie, gather around the tables for this candid shot. During the tumultuous years of the First World War, furniture manufacturers like Waring & Gillow played an unexpected role in supporting the war effort. This photograph was commissioned by the company itself, showcasing their dedication to producing goods essential for military operations. The White City factory depicted here became a hub for manufacturing tents used by soldiers on the front lines. Beyond tents, Waring & Gillow also contributed significantly to other aspects of wartime production. They manufactured ammunition belts that were crucial accessories for machine guns, nosebags designed to feed horses on battlefields, and protective clothing worn during gas attacks – all vital contributions towards ensuring soldier safety. As we gaze upon this image from over a century ago, it serves as a poignant reminder of how industries adapted during times of crisis. It is a testament to human resilience and resourcefulness amidst adversity. This remarkable piece from Historic England Archive encapsulates not only historical significance but also offers us glimpses into everyday life during one of humanity's most challenging periods – an invaluable window into our shared past.
