EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring interior of York Minster, also known as St Peters Cathedral Church. The image showcases a magnificent view looking west from the choir, with the choir screen and crossing serving as focal points in the background. The intricately designed choir screen is situated under the eastern crossing arch and features niches adorned with beautifully sculpted figures on its western side. On the eastern side of this gothic wooden structure lies a central doorway that adds to its grandeur. The screen, pulpit, and Archbishops throne depicted in this photograph are all exquisite examples of gothic architecture by Sir Robert Smirke. These remarkable pieces were meticulously crafted after a devastating fire ravaged York Minster in 1829. Designed to be harmonious with the original 15th-century fittings, they seamlessly blend into their medieval surroundings. George Bernard Wood's skillful photography allows viewers to appreciate not only the architectural splendor but also feel transported back in time within this historic cathedral setting. As one gazes upon this image, they can almost hear echoes of ancient chants reverberating through these hallowed halls. This print serves as a testament to both Wood's talent behind the lens and Historic England's commitment to preserving our rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
